I didn’t realize how much my hearing loss was hurting the people around me
Many people suffer from hearing loss…and we are not just talking about the people whose ears are affected. Hearing loss affects friends, family, co-workers, business associates, and everyone a person with a hearing problem comes into contact with. That’s a lot of people! In fact, the latest available statistics show that over 10% of the U.S. population reports difficulty hearing! That’s more than 31 million people! And as the Baby Boomer generation continues to age, that number promises to increase dramatically!
The Numbers Explain the Need for Hearing Aids & Assistive Listening Devices
Are you someone who no longer hears as well as you once did? If so, you are certainly not alone. Consider these statistics reported by Sergei Kochkin, Ph.D., former Executive Director of the Better Hearing Institute:
3 in 10 people over age 60 have hearing loss
1 in 6 baby boomers (ages 41-59), or 14.6%, have a hearing problem
1 in 14 Generation Xers (ages 29-40), or 7.4%, already have hearing loss
At least 1.4 million children (18 or younger) have hearing problems
Estimates say 3 in 1,000 infants are born with serious to profound hearing loss
In addition, studies have linked untreated hearing loss to emotional, physical, mental, psychological and even economic disadvantages! And, to make matters even worse, there are many “myths” about hearing loss that prevent those with hearing loss from doing anything about it.

Went to see Austin Hearing Service to have impressions made for custom in ear monitors. Being completely new to the process I wasnât quite sure what to expect and was pleasantly surprised by how helpful and knowledgeable Dr. Hutchinson was when it came to In ear monitors for musicians. The whole process takes about 30 minutes, most of which is going over the process with you in detail and making sure the molds are done correctly. I would highly recommend any of musician brethren looking to transition to custom molded in ear monitors to use Austin Hearing Services.

We can speak very highly of Dr. Hutchinson. She is calm and professional, yet real and sincere and down to earth. She inspires confidence. She never makes you feel rushed. If she isnât sure about something, she will say so and immediately consult while you are still there. She saw us the same day with a problem even though we had just moved here and never had seen her before, nor had we bought my husbandâs hearing aid from her. Again, we canât imagine seeing anyone else.

Dr. Margaret Hutchinson has been providing my hearing aid service since 2007. She is very kind and caring and patiently listens to my concerns. She made sure I understood what each type of aid provided to determine the most suitable aid for my hearing loss with a look toward future adjustments as well. Also, she doesnât assume you know something that you might not have learned about hearing loss and how your aids work. Her customer service after the purchase is exceptional. She also has a great sense of humor!

Hearing impaired since birth, and now in my fifties, I always hated almost everything about hearing aids⦠and buying them was at the top of the list⦠well my experience at Austin Hearing changed all that. Dr. Hutchison worked within my limited budget and found a solution that was far superior to any of the âbig boxâ or franchise offeringsâ¦I canât say enough about Margaretâ¦. she cares a great deal about her work, providing the right solution for each patient. I no longer dread going to the Audiologist.

Dr. Hutchinson has been a true âmiracle workerâ for my father, who has profound hearing loss and also dementia. He had hearing aids but really didnât seem to help him that much. He was so âchecked outâ and disconnected from everyone and everything that we assumed that he was deteriorating mainly from the dementia. We took him to Dr. Hutchinson, who was able to do an EXTREMELY thorough exam and audiology testing for him and fitted him with new hearing aids. They were expensive, like ALL good hearing aids are, but the results were nothing short of MIRACULOUS! My dad can hear now as well as I can⦠It is as though we re-wound his life back 3 years! He is telling stories, watching movies (still use close captioning to help out), visiting with others (instead of just staring off). My mom now has a partner and friend back to talk and share things with. (a forgetful friend ..but a real live happy man and not the sad shell that his terrible deafness had left him) We just didnât realize how much of his diminished state was due to hearing loss. Seeing his audiogram was shocking â“ we realized that he was missing everything that went on around him! Yes his short term memory is still poor, but he is smiling and laughing and enjoying the grandchildren and telling stories and teasing them⦠and being teased! All because of Dr. Hutchinsonâs thorough evaluation and selection of the hearing devices that would work best for him. 5 stars is NOT ENOUGH to thank her for her attentiveness and thoroughness with my fatherâs care. She explains everything, you donât feel rushed, her follow up is great and the hearing aids did not only what we hoped they would ⦠but a 100 x more than we even imagined!

I have had several audiograms with the military with very little feedback about my status: either âgoâ or âno-goâ. I dreaded gong to a civilian audiologist, sitting in another booth listening to beeps and phantom beeps; it seemed like a set-up for a long boring afternoon. Instead, I met Dr. Margaret Hutchison. For the 1st time in decades, I was able to actually have a dialogue with my audiologist. I learned about how and why my wax buildup occurred; learned how to better care for my hearing; learned my hearing problem was not curable but did not have remain untreated. I was delighted with my visit, learned a lot, and trust her enough to make an appointment for my children. Donât be shy about talking to her â“ she will listen. Thank you Dr. Hutchison for your professionalism and assistance.

“My experience was excellent from the moment I walked into the door to the time I left with a pair of hearing aids that opened a new world of communication that I didnât realize how much I had been missing. My work has improved and I can enjoy having a dinner conversation with family and friends. I donât feel isolated anymore. My marriage is much happier since the Television isnât turned up so loud; and, my wife doesnât have to repeat things. Dr. Hutchison goes beyond just dispensing a hearing aid. She worked with me to find my needs and lifestyle to match my hearing loss with the appropriate pair of hearing aids that fit my situation and budget.”
